PETER BROGGS
Rise and Shine
(Ras)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1994.
"Rise and Shine," originally released in 1985, was
Peter Brogg's second recording for RAS records (his first,
"Rastafari Liveth," has the distinction of being RAS'
first-ever release). This timeless album, finally available
on CD, is full of serious, spiritual music by an artist
whose career has gone largely unnoticed.
The 10 tracks, starting with "You Got To Be Wise" and
ending with "Rastaman Chant Nyahbingi," are delivered in a
true roots style with soothing yet powerful rhythms. The
backing musicians were (and still are) some of Jamaica's
finest, including Sly Dunbar, Flabba Holt, Bingy Bunny, Dean
Fraser and Augustus Pablo. The Wailer's even make a guest
appearance on one track, making "International Farmer" a
real killer.
Although this disc is relatively brief (37 1/2
minutes), it's full of crucial reggae and adheres to the old
saying of quality over quantity. Give this one a listen.
"Rise and Shine" sounds as good, if not better, today than
when it was first released.
