JACK RADICS
Open Rebuke
(Star Trail/Heartbeat)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1994.
Heartbeat Records recent agreement to distribute Star Trail recordings in America
has resulted in another fine release, this time from Jack Radics.
Radics has been recording since the mid-80's, but only recently has this intense and
soulful vocalist made a major impact on the reggae scene. On the heels of last spring's #1
UK hit ("Twist and Shout" with Chaka Demus and Pliers), Radics has unleashed a new
CD full of power and emotion.
"Open Rebuke" contains one dozen tracks of modern reggae with conscious and
spiritual messages. On "Even When You Cry," (a blistering version of the Sensations'
"Everyday Is A Holiday"), Radics wails in his unique style: "Why you wanna live on your
yesterdays/ Why you wanna worry when you can pray...Between the day you're born and
the day you die/ Only Jah Jah gonna hear you, even when you cry."
Other intense numbers include the title track, "Live Fast Die Young," "Step 'Cross
The Border," "Let My People Go" (with guest DJ Kulcha Knox) and a ballad featuring
Yami Bolo, entitled "Puppet Master At Play."
"Open Rebuke" has an all star cast of musicians, including Sly and Robbie, Dean
Fraser, and the Firehouse Crew. Coupled with the crisp and clean production work of
Richard Bell, this high-powered disc from Jamaica's hottest new star is definitely worth
your attention.
