JUSTIN HINDS
Know Jah Better
(Nighthawk)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1992.
Nighthawk records, the St. Louis based blues and reggae
label, has come up with another fine release from one of
Jamaica's smoothest and best-loved vocalists, Justin Hinds.
Hinds and his previous singing partners, known as the
Dominoes, were pioneers in the history of reggae, ever since
their initial hit, "Carry Go Bring Home," in the ska era of
the early 60's.
"Know Jah Better" gives us 12 tracks (which includes
two dubs), over 45 minutes of gentle rhythms and, as the
title suggests, conscious, spiritual lyrics. The relatively
unknown musicians - except for Dean Fraser on saxophone and
a few appearances by Sly Dunbar on drums - lay down some
nice island sounds to compliment Hinds' gentle, distinctive
vocals.
Highlights include the opening song "War Time," "Want
More," "Happy Go Lucky," "No Place Like Home" (with some
exceptional free form guitar work), and the title track.
Justin Hinds is still producing quality music, and
after hearing his latest release, it's obvious, three
decades after first coming into prominence, this bona fide
reggae legend still has a lot to offer.
