KINGSTON TOWN: 18 REGGAE HITS
(Heartbeat)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1993
This fine collection of obscure reggae songs from
producer Clancy Eccles is another in a long line of quality
compilations issued from Heartbeat records.
This record company has already given us a number of
excellent recordings showcasing the works of producers
Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid, Sonia Pottinger, Derrick Harriott,
Alvin Ranglin and Niney the Observer. They've even had a
previous release featuring Eccles entitled, "Clancy Eccles
Presents His Reggae Revue."
"Kingston Town" gives us 18 tracks from the early 70's
when the music was still changing from the faster pace of
rock steady to the slower, hypnotic sounds of what became
known as roots reggae. Some of the songs are mellow and
choppy while others are more upbeat. Regardless of the
tempo, there's a raw feel that permeates each track.
Some of the artists you'll probably hear for the first
time include Tito Simon, Carlton Wedderburn, the Dingle
Bros. and Exuma. There are also tunes by Lee Perry, Lord
Creator and even Eccles himself.
Although Clancy Eccles wasn't as well known as some of
Jamaica's premiere producers of the day, he still provided
us with some memorable recordings. This disc is proof
positive of that.
