BLOWTORCH
Justice Or Else
"Justice Or Else," the long-awaited debut by Blowtorch, has finally been released.
Indicative of the band's name, this is a real scorcher - hot to the touch.
Consisting of 16 tracks, the heavy vinyl (or digital download, both available from Bandcamp) is just under 36 minutes of hard-driving rock -
Blowtorch terms it "conscious punk" - full of catchy riffs and spot on vocals.
The sound is full and powerful and the musicianship is outstanding (in fact, each instrument - drums, bass and guitar - is played by the incredibly talented Bill Mullins). Clark Russell handles lead vocals while Mullins also adds some nice harmonies to the mix.
From the disc's title, it's obvious Blowtorch is not messing around. "Skybot" kicks things off in fine form and from there it's a barrage of all killers, no fillers. Each song is truly strong but other absolute favorites include "Mad Reactor," "Eggplant," "Breaking," "Mirror," "Clockwise," "Bridge Out,"
"Panic" and the closing track "Thank You." (Who am I kidding, they're all absolute favorites).
Russell's lyrics are concise and thoughtful throughout. He even adds interesting sound samples at the end of almost half of the songs. This is a thinking man's band. The pace is sometimes frantic, sometimes slowed down, but always rocking.
Based in Burlington, VT, Blowtorch sounds like they could have released this in 1977. Hard rock, conscious punk, whatever you want to call it, bottom line is it kicks ass. Check it out.
