LUCKY DUBE
House Of Exile
(Shanachie)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1992.
South African superstar Lucky Dube's latest release,
"House Of Exile," strips reggae back to its roots with 10
soothing, yet powerful tracks.
Dube's expressive vocals evoke memories of the late
Peter Tosh, while his backing female vocalists deliver
superb harmonies. The slow motion sound - fueled by the
offbeat rhythm guitar and accented by the dynamic drumming -
shows his band, The Slaves, once again in top form, as they
play in a roots groove throughout.
With conscious song titles, "Up With Hope (Down With
Dope)," "Reap What You Sow," "Mickey Mouse Freedom;" and
lyrics, "we cannot stand aside and look while the nation is
going down the drain" (from "Up With Hope"), it's obvious
that Dube has something to say (and hats off to Shanachie
Records for including the lyrics).
Lucky Dube is a tremendous performer and "House Of
Exile" is an excellent release. Check it out. This one's a
guaranteed killer dose of current roots reggae.
