HALF PINT
Classics
(Hightone)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1994.
Lindon Roberts, better known as Half Pint, has been releasing quality reggae for
well over a decade. This new release features some of his biggest hits from the mid-80's on
the Sunset label.
Compiled by Charlie Morgan of Outernational Records, the dozen songs on
"Classics" are both singles and rarities, capturing a time when Half Pint was at the
forefront of the burgeoning dancehall scene.
Standout tracks include "Winsome" (which was later covered by the Rolling
Stones under the title "Too Rude"), "Hold On," "Come To Pass," "Don't Try To Use Me"
and "Crazy Girl."
The sound is deep and clean, with an outstanding mix by Peter Chemist (there's also a
companion dub album in the works). The tracks
were recorded at Kingston's Channel One studio and the timeless rhythms come courtesy
of one of reggae's all-time great rhythm teams, Sly and Robbie.
Half Pint, with his distinctive vocal style, continues to release superb singles. With
the release of "Classics," some of his earliest and most vital work is now available.
