YAMI BOLO
Fighting For Peace
(Ras)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1994.
One of Jamaica's premier vocalists, Yami Bolo, has recently released "Fighting For
Peace," a twelve track disc from this passionate and powerful singer.
Things begin quite impressively, with the first three songs being among Bolo's best
ever. The offbeat of "People Of South Africa," the irony of the title track ("the whole
world fighting for peace") and personal favorite, "Officials Are Like Locust," are biting
commentaries with music at the cutting edge of modern reggae.
After the fourth cut, Bolo offers an updated version of Desi Young's "I Don't
Know Why I Love You" followed by the hard-core "Glock War, Gun War." From this
point, though, the music loses its power until the final track, instead offering some lighter
and more contrived sounds.
Without a doubt, "Fighting For Peace" definitely has its share of crucial tunes, but
the others, even though they're catchy, are basically fillers. This disc could have been one
of the year's best. Instead it's an uneven release from one of Jamaica's most promising
talents.
