MEDITATIONS
Deeper Roots
(Heartbeat)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1994.
With the release of "Deeper Roots: The Best of The Meditations" it's obvious to
see why this classic Jamaican group was one of Bob Marley's favorites (in fact, the
informative liner notes state that Marley hand-picked this vocal trio to harmonize on three
of his late 70's compositions: "Blackman Redemption," "Punky Reggae Party" and
"Rastaman Live Up").
Marley obviously knew talent when he heard it. The 20 tracks and over 70 minutes
of inspired reggae is as good as it gets.
Over half of the tunes are from their first three albums, including such standards as
"Wake Up," "Babylon Trap Them," "Woman Is Like A Shadow" and "Running From
Jamaica." The remaining songs include assorted Jamaican singles, rare cuts, one previously
unreleased track and a couple from the "original Lee Perry session tapes."
Ansel Cridland, Danny Clarke and Winston Watson comprise the Meditations. If
you're unfamiliar with the greatness of this group, do yourself a favor and check out this
"must have" collection.
