Mongoose
Club Viva, August 26, 1999
Another impressive show rolled through town last night, and even though
I'm beat and gotta get to work, I had to write down a few words...
Luciano last Tuesday, then Mongoose. What a week...
Let me tell ya, these guys are a WICKED band, guaranteed to blow you
away. I saw em months ago and they were good, but since then they've
added Ronnie Stepper on bass and they are TIGHT! (Ronnie was Steel
Pulse's original bassist and played on their 1st 5 records!!! He's a
cool dude, with dreads all the way to the floor!). So just imagine him
laying down some wicked bass lines all night. Just classic...
They played at Club Viva, a nice, intimate setting, and though the
crowd wasn't big it got going later and the vibe was really righteous.
Sound was great and people were really into it.
They started off with 3 from their excellent release "Soul
Deliverance:" Feelin Thirsty, Rizo and a different version of Prankster.
Then they played some new tracks from their forethcoming release (which
is gonna be CRUCIAL!).
They also mixed in a wicked version of "So Jah Seh" and their last
tune from the 1st set was "Liberation," and they somehow mixed in
"Forever Loving Jah" in the middle of the song and lead singer Maimon
even sang some of it in Hebrew. It was unforgettable.
After a break - and the crowd all abuzz how great they were - they
played a 45 minute 2nd set which was just as outstanding. They started
off with "Concrete Jungle" (and somehow mixed Stevie's "Livin' For The
City" in there) then they played many unreleased tunes which blew us all
away.
The lead guitarist took over the mike a few times and sang some nice
tracks. He did a killer version of "Raid The Barn" which was heavy.
Maimon even sang a track in French!
In a real roots style.
They have 2 horn players who sounded great. These guys just kicked
ass...
I'm tellin ya, if Mongoose comes to your town, check em out! They
really have a good vibe and you won't be disappointed. And until their
new release, which I'm tellin ya will be unbelievable, check out "Soul
Deliverance." Mongoose is definitely on the loose...
