Gregory Isaacs and Frankie Paul
Club Isis, February 20, 1999
Despite it being on a Monday night, at a club that's never had live
Reggae, and with a forecast of 2"-4" of snow, St. Louis showed up in
force to welcome two classic vocalists, Frankie Paul and Gregory Isaacs
(Colin Sampson was also on the bill).
Doors opened at 7 with the show scheduled at 8, and the place was
getting packed early. By 10 p.m., we were all getting restless. The
Kalabash band (sp?) were shooting pool in the basement ready to jam, but
apparently FP was at the airport so they were waiting...
Manager Don Taylor was very antsy, but cool. Then around 10:30 or so,
I'm outside and here comes a small entourage escorting FP into the club.
Straight from Lambert Field.
So the Kalabash band started (Jr. Jazz was on guitar) and they played a
few of his songs from "Dangerous Game." Then the big, burly Colin
Sampson sang some nice lovers rock for a bit. Then FP came on the stage
and he was fantastic. He played tracks like Tidal Wave, Cassanova,
Tu-sheng-Peng and he was fantastic. In very good voice and played to the
crowd very well. Sang for 45 or so minutes. Then they went right into
Gregory. No breaks or anything. It was irie.
I've never seen the Cool Ruler and I'll tell ya, he was fantastic. He
came out in a nice brown suit and trademark hat, and just played hit
after hit. The place went crazy. I mean it was non-stop, hit after hit.
Kinda like the Ramones used to do!
Rumors, Not The Way, Sad To Know (You're Leaving), Material Man, Night
Nurse. Just classic after classic after classic. The band was tight and
it was a great night. Gregory played for a little over an hour and
believe me, everyone left satisfied.
It was intersting seeing Don Taylor on stage bringing Gregory water and
a towel. He seemed to really be taking care of him. I'm not sure how
long he's been his manager, but it seems that he's a very positive force
and Gregory might be ready to really dominate the concert circuit...
On my way home I jammed LOUD two new songs from Nasio Fontaine from his
upcoming release, "Revolution." Jah Glory and Truth Will Reveal.
Unbelievable! Get ready, that is gonna be one killer CD.
