Classic Reggae Volume One
(Profile)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1992
This recent reggae compilation from Profile records
chronicles material from the mid-70's to the mid-80's, and
is a package worth checking out - especially if you're a
novice reggae listener.
This is extremely accessible Jamaican music, kicking
off with Sugar Minott's "We've Got A Good Thing Going," and
including the over-used (yet still timeless) tunes, "Agony"
by Pinchers, "Cocaine In My Brain" by Dillinger, and
"Greetings" by Half Pint.
Some other favorites include "Murderer," "Cottage In
Negril," "Baltimore," "Buddy Bye," and an extended version
of "One Draw;" by Barrington Levy, Tyrone Taylor, the
Tamlins, Johnny Osbourne, and Rita Marley, respectively.
This apparently is the first in a series of classic
reggae compilations from Profile records. The dozen tracks
selected here were all once major hits in Jamaica and the
U.K., and for good reason. Pick this one up and find out
why.
